The client

Leeds Digital Festival is a two-week-long event, championing the technology sector through meetups, seminars, and workshops, hosted by the city’s digital businesses and entrepreneurs.

Tall has partnered with Leeds Digital Festival to create a digital presence for the event, as it enters its fourth year.

The challenge

In 2018, Leeds Digital Festival welcomed 20,000 visitors to 170 events at 68 venues across the city.

The new website will require an events-focused platform to increase awareness about the event, sponsorship news, highlights, and further cement Leeds as the digital capital of the North.

Brand Digitisation

For 2019, Leeds Digital Festival implemented a slight evolution to their brand identity with an update including the evolution of their logo and a new colour palette. As an executive sponsor, Tall has been involved with the festival for the last 3 years - and was creating the new website for the 2019 festival.

The 'Brand digitisation' of the LDF brand included the creation of multiple versions of the logo for enhanced legibility across a wider array of devices and small sizes.

Not only was it essential to discover how the brand adapts to the digital world but visualise the personality of the brand through a set of characteristics that are attributed emotions that sums up the experience of Leeds Digital Festival.

Striking the right balance between identity rules and usability. The aim is to create an engaging and well-balanced user experience so utilising a fluid layout system to enhance static or motion content is extremely important but the key is for both to share the same space without overpowering the user and maximise the attention span with every scroll.

Content-heavy sites such as this require users to navigate in the quickest way possible to find events, information on specific event or sponsors and showcase the essence of the festival – adopting this style allowed users to get them to exactly where they need to be.

The route of discovery

After establishing the right look and feel, there was definitely something interesting creating portals to show a highlight of the festival and creating a suite interactive HTML 5 elements implemented throughout the website. Linking back to the festival manifesto with the mystery of discovery and connecting people with stories.

From that point, it’s all about building a consistent and event-driven platform that fluidly flows between event images, hover states, transitions, and all the little details making the experience both efficient and pleasant.

What we achieved

Not only a digital brand and website – the creation of an online brand portal was essential for this open platform event, which acts as an ever accessible area for event organisers, marketers, PR, and designers to access tailor-made LDF brand resources.

With the festival growing year on year, Leeds Digital Festival is going to be bigger and better than ever and strengthening Leeds’ position as a hub for tech and digital excellence.
